We know the recent posts have had a very alcoholic flavor and yes this one is no exception. But there is more to Annesbrook than making booze – it re-enforces the stereotype of the drunken Irish! Be assured the next post will not be about making your own intoxicating liquid! In the meantime back to the Mead…
Mead has been brewed for about 8,000 and pre-dates wine and beer. It is essentially a honey based drink brewed on just about every content and varies in taste and colour depending on the honey and flavors added.
We had a go at making “quick mead” or “short mead”. This version of mead ages quickly, ready to drink in about 2 weeks. It has a relatively low alcohol level and still has effervescence after the fermentation. A lot of effervescence so much we had an exploding bottle or two, perhaps we had a heavy hand when we were adding the yeast…
Whatever about the antics in the creation and fermentation the end result was a success. Something we will be doing again soon.
